Hakon Hakonarson, MD, PhD, Founding Director
of CHOP’s Center for Applied Genomics.
Dr. Hakonarson is a Principal Investigator within three major network efforts, including eMERGE, Kids First/Gabriella Miller, and the TOPMed genomics programs funded by the NIH. He ranks among “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” (Thomson Reuters top 1%) with over 900 publications. He has focused much of his career on identifying genetic risk factors in individuals of African ancestry, yielding over 300 unique publications in this domain. He has published numerous high-impact papers on genomic discoveries and their translations in some of the most prestigious scientific medical journals, including Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Genetics, Cell, Science, and The New England Journal of Medicine. Through numerous collaborations worldwide, he has established over 500,000 unique samples in the CAG biobank today. He also established a strong team to move these discoveries into clinical use. He is an attending physician in pulmonary medicine.
